Why Do We Hiccup?

Hiccups usually come from eating or drinking too quickly. The stomach swells and irritates the diaphragm above it. The diaphragm muscle is used for breathing and contracts when we inhale. But in this situation, the irritated diaphragm will start to spasm and contract, causing hiccups.

Hiccups can also occur (and may be cured) through emotional situations. That’s why it may be possible to frighten someone away from their hiccups. Also, apparently breathing into a bag increases the amount of Carbon Dioxide in the lungs, and can relax the muscular spasm, stopping hiccups.

The best method for me I think is the distraction method. Just try not to think about it, pretend you’re not hiccuping at all and the hiccups will go away. There are countless other home remedies for hiccups – so as with most things, pick the one that works best for you.
